You may want to read these papers: Under current climate conditions, due to the global-scale sea level pressure difference between the N. Pacific and N. Atlantic, water flow through Bering Strait northward (except the surface layer and strong north wind). Thus, deep biological species can move from Pacific to Atlantic only. However, there was a potential exception: during some strong anomalous climate condition (such as during last glacial maximum), the deep water formation may take place in the N. Pacific, and the corresponding sea level difference might flip sign. Under such special situations, the flow through Bering strait might be reversed... |
