Although WiFi can be found in remote places like the North Pole and Africa’s grasslands, mankind is still pushing his limit by seeing if they can develop an underwater wireless network.

Spearheaded by researchers at the University of Buffalo in New York, this underwater wireless network could possibly beam data from submerged sensors to any smartphone or computer.

Developed to detect tsunamis, collect data on pollution, and monitor oil rigs, this technology can also be used to study life underwater.

However, creating an underwater wireless network is challenging as communication underwater uses sound waves, which are then converted to radio waves.

Yet, the research team has been streamlining the data accumulated underwater so that it can be transmitted wirelessly, even pulling off a test successfully in Lake Erie.

Tommaso Melodia, head researcher of the project, states that this project could save lives, but this technology is still in the works so updating your Facebook status underwater will have to wait.

It's a good idea for recovering the data from ocean bottom instruments.
